Ijams Nature Center is located in Knoxville, Tennessee. Though only a few minutes east of downtown, Ijams contains more than 300 acres of natural beauty along the Tennessee River. As a nature center, Ijams hosts myriad classes at its visitor center throughout the year. The visitor center also houses some exhibits on the natural features of the area, including some animals. The real star of Ijams, however, are the fun nature trails that criss-cross the preserve, allowing visitors to explore the great variety of plant life that exists in East Tennessee, glimpse scenic views of the Tennessee River, and perhaps spot some wildlife. During our hike, we explored a low-lying swampy area, traversed rolling hills and wooded forests, and even saw an owl fly just over our heads.

In addition to the hiking trails, Ijams has an outdoor school on the premises that also offers classes and outings. Ijams also owns and operates Mead’s Quarry, an old rock quarry that has now been filled with water and offers scenic swimming and paddling. While we did not get into the water during our visit, we did stop by the quarry and admired the lovely setting. Overall, Ijams offers a pleasant and peaceful place to get out in nature and enjoy the natural world.
