Day 4: Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park

Located on the Georgia/Tennessee border is Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. The park helps to demonstrate the diversity of the National Park Sites with its primary emphasis being history, more specifically two Civil War battlefields. The South is full of sites marking where historic battles were previously fought, such as Pickett’s Mill Battlefield, but since Chickamauga and Chattanooga National NMP are part of the NPS, there is a larger visitor center for people to come learn more about the history that shaped the United States. The park has a variety of activities to offer visitors. We recommend starting in the visitor center any time you visit a park because it helps to shape your understanding of the importance of the site. The visitor center offers people a chance to read up on the history behind the battlefields. Afterwards you can either take a ranger led talk or hit the trails on your own and explore the park. The trails offer visitors historic experiences and wildlife. We hiked the General Bragg trail during our visit, and it was a fairly easy trail and allowed us to see different sites where the battle was carried out and where different soldiers were actually situated as the battle was being fought. Finally, the park offers a variety of roads for visitors to drive through and explore. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park provided us with an afternoon of history and adventures.

 

Side Note: The park is located near Georgia Winery. After a day hiking and learning, we stopped by the winery for a little relaxation.
