One of our absolute favorite National Park sites that we have visited is City of Rocks National Reserve. The park is located in Idaho, near the Nevada and Utah border. The park is centered around the massive and impressive rock outcrops. Several tribes have been in the area for generations and more recently the California Trail ran through the area, making it a historic area for hundreds of years. The area is now known for outdoor recreation, including hiking, biking, rock climbing, fishing, hunting, archery, horseback riding, snowshoeing, skiing, bird watching, stargazing, and camping.
We started at the small Visitor Center for a picnic lunch and then went along the scenic drive and trails that allowed us to experience the unique and beautiful formations. The formations were so expansive and provided some truly beautiful views. When we visited we only saw a few other people. In general the park is not very developed or visited, so it makes for a great way to get out in nature and enjoy some wonderful sites while in a peaceful setting.
