Jefferson Landing State Historic Site operates as part of the Missouri State Museum located in the Missouri capitol building. However, Jefferson Landing is a separate site just down the hill from the capitol along the Missouri River. The historic site preserves what is today called the Lohman Building. Built in 1839, the building served many purposes for the new capital city of Missouri. It was a hub of trade and commerce, and a place through which many people passed on their way to and from the capital. Throughout its early history, the structure served as a general store, a warehouse, a tavern, a telegraph office, and a hotel, and was especially known as a meeting place for powerful political, social, and commercial people.

Today, Jefferson Landing preserves this history and allows visitors to learn a bit of the early history of Jefferson City and experience a river landing from the 19th century. Visitors are able to tour the Lohman Building, which is set up to look like some of the functions it has served over the years and includes displays that share the history of the building and the area. Jefferson Landing State Historic Site is a fun place to visit for those who enjoy history and pairs well with a visit to the Missouri capitol.
