Southern Illinois is full of wineries and hiking, and one of our favorite places to explore is Giant City State Park. The park is located in Makanda, IL and provides an expansive natural area for visitors to enjoy the outdoors. Giant City is known for the beautiful and giant formations that are throughout the park, as well as the site of Giant City Stone Fort Site. The fort is from the Late Woodland period and allows visitors to hike to see the remnants of the fort. Besides hiking, the park offers picnicking, rock climbing, horse back riding, and fishing. Additionally, there is a historic lodge that was built by the CCC with a restaurant, gift shop, pool, and lodging. When we visited we went on several trails that showed the unique and beautiful natural features, as well as a visit to the historic fort, as then finished at the lodge for a lovely Saturday!
