While visiting family in the area, we decided to extend our trip and explore the lovely little state of Delaware. Delaware is considered the first state since they were the first to ratify the constitution, so our adventure started in New Castle, DE where one of the six sites of the First State National Historical Park is located. The New Castle site focuses on the the New Castle Court House, which is nicely situated in the center of town. We parked along the main square and strolled along the historic buildings, square, and waterfront. For those who enjoy architecture, we definitely recommend a visit to New Castle.
Afterwards, we stopped by The Mercury Cafe and Teahouse. We enjoyed a delightful meal and coffee in the quaint little outdoor patio. Next we drove to Dover, DE and explored the Dover Green. The buildings surrounding the Dover Green extend the historic charm and for those who enjoy architecture, are fun to explore! Finally, we stopped by the John Dickinson Plantation just outside of Dove, DE and ventured about the grounds and museum. We found each site of the First State National Historical Park interesting and hope to return for the other three sites!
Next we drove down the state to Lewes Beach. The weather was chilly, but sunny, so we walked along the beach and enjoyed watching the waves. Next we stopped for yummy dinner and some brews at Crooked Hammock Brewery. The beer was decent, but our favorite was definitely the food! Afterwards, we settled in for the evening.
The next morning was rainy, so to warm up, we stopped by Kaisy Delights for some coffee and kaiserschmarren! Next, we headed Rehoboth Beach. The rain broke for a short time, so we spent the morning walking along the beach in one direction looking at seashells and back along the board walk. The rainy weather was actually quite lovely and we were some of the only people on the beach.
Afterwards, we headed to Dogfish Head for a delicious meal and a fun flight! Our favorite was perhaps the gin. It was so good, we bought a bottle to go and have thoroughly enjoyed it! We then drove to the Nanticoke Museum. The museum is small, but showed the culture of the Nanticoke people, which we both found quite interesting. We both recommend a visit to learn more about the Nanticoke.
Then we took a quick detour to the Fenwick Island Lighthouse. The Fenwick Island Lighthouse is right along the Delaware and Maryland border in Ocean City, MD, which is a beach town. Afterwards, we drove back up the coast and stopped at Fenwick Island State Park and Bethany Beach. Our evening ended at Thompson Island Brewery for some yummy pub bites and good beer!
Although it was just a short trip, we both had a great time and feel like we were able to explore the state! We both look forward to a return trip and already have several itineraries planned to see the state further. The history, beaches, breweries, food and nature have definitely made Delaware one of our favorite trips!
