A small, but unique museum in St. Louis is the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art, also known as MOCRA. The museum is located on Saint Louis University’s (SLU’s) campus grounds in the heart of campus. The museum focuses on contemporary religious art, which can involve historic symbols and iconography in a new way, contemporary issues embedded into religious identity, or abstract and creative pieces that speak to themes. The museum is one large room and only takes about 15-20 minutes to explore; however, if you choose to really delve into the meanings and the artists themselves, you could spend additional time there. When we visited we slowly walked amongst the museum and spent about 20 minutes and then enjoyed a stroll throughout SLU’s campus. The pieces touched on a variety of traditional and modern themes that allowed viewers to engage deep religious meanings in a new way. Although we generally prefer more classical styles, the museum provided a time of reflection and led to a discussion. MOCRA is small, but free to visitors, so it is nice for a relaxed day of explorations.
