The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge encompasses the islands and areas of nearby shoreline in and along the Mississippi River from just north of Rock Island, Illinois into Minnesota. This area of the Mississippi River contains chains of islands, both large and small, overlooked by bluffs along the banks of the river. The river and these areas of land preserve the natural elements of the river and protect the habitats of migratory birds and other wildlife. While many of these islands require a boat in order to travel to them, there are islands along bridges that allow easy access for hikers.

One such area is just west of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin as one travels over the river into Iowa. A short hiking trail takes visitors near lowland areas through the forests of the island and to small platforms overlooking the river beyond the island. The refuge provides visitors the opportunity to explore a unique ecosystem and geographical region, even granting the ability to see some of these areas without access to a boat. Exploring the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge offers sweeping vistas of one of the world’s largest rivers, an up-close look at this ecosystem, and fun recreational opportunities.
