A unique feature in the Quad Cities is Sylvan Island. The island was previously an industrial site due to its location along the river, but has since been abandoned and turned into a city park. The park provides visitors to explore the ruins, while also enjoying some nature. Sylvan Island is technically part of Moline, IL, but sits in the midst of all four cities. The island has a 1.2 mile loop that runs around the island, but also has trails cutting through the park and the former steel factory. Besides opportunities to walk, bike, and run the trails, Sylvan Island also offers an opportunity to fish.

To enter, visitors park in a lot right behind John Deere on the Illinois side and then cross over a footbridge into the park. When we visited it was a lovely day with warm sunshine and a cool breeze. We spent the afternoon weaving along the trails and taking in views of both the ruins and the river. The park is a unique space due to its blend of the old and nature. We definitely recommend that anyone in the Quad Cities area visit Sylvan Island for a nature walk.
