A classic fun little South City eatery in St. Louis is Gus’ Pretzels. The pretzel shop has been family-owned since 1920 and is the third-generation of bakers. Although laws have changed, the pretzels became famous for the employees who sold the pretzels on street corners. Now visitors can find Gus’ Pretzels located in the Benton Park neighborhood in a non-assuming brick building. Inside there is a hallway with large windows to watch the pretzels being made and then a counter for visitors to order from a variety of pretzel treats. The menu and the decor reflect the German heritage of not only the city, but Gus’ Pretzels.
Although the shop specializes in pretzels, Gus’ Pretzels offers a variety of pretzels including the standard pretzel, garlic-butter pretzels, and cinnamon-sugar pretzels, as well as pretzel sticks, ends, and the standard shape. Additionally, there are various wursts wrapped in pretzels and sandwich options, providing a an assortment of options for visitors. Besides in-store visits, there are options to buy a large variety of pretzel dips, opportunities to buy specialized or personalized shaped pretzels, bulk pretzels for parties, and frozen pretzels so you can enjoy them at a later date and time. Our favorite is actually the Lenten specialty, which is a cheese sandwich that is absolutely delicious. Gus’ Pretzels is a St. Louis staple, and always a fun treat.
Side Note: Gus’ Pretzels also sells other St. Louis South City eatery options of Ted Drewes and Dad’s Cookies.
