Driving through Pennsylvania is one of our absolute favorite things and a perfect stop along the way is Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site. The site tells about the first railroad that crossed through the Allegheny Mountains, and the unique portage railway. The park preserves the railroad and provides visitors the opportunity to learn more about the area and importance of the site. Allegheny Portage has a visitor center, hiking trails, historic buildings, and, of course, the railroad!

We visited on a weekday and there were only a few other people there. We started at the visitor center to learn more about the park and then explored the buildings. Our visit was a little over an hour and we felt like we were able to see the park, but there is also opportunities to hike and explore longer if you are able to. The location is the perfect stopping by for those driving across Pennsylvania! We really enjoyed learning more about the portage system and exploring the park.
