While there are many sites across the United States that celebrate Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and there transcontinental journey, Lewis and Clark National Historic Park commemorates the end of their westward trip and the place where they wintered, Fort Clatsop.
The visitor center provides guests a look at Lewis’s and Clark’s journey and, especially, how they spent their time on the Oregon coast. Visitors are also able to learn about the native people’s who helped them and traded with them and the conditions they endured while on the coast. Just a short walk from the visitor center is a reconstruction of Fort Clatsop, where Lewis and Clark and the rest of the Corps of Discovery wintered from 1805 to 1806. The fort is quite small, so it’s easy to see, though it is also worth seeing. Visitors can check out the sleeping quarters, storage areas, and offices tucked into the small walled structure. The national historical park also has other hiking trails that lead to additional places that Lewis and Clark visited.
Lewis and Clark National Historical Park allows visitors to explore a fascinating part of United States history and to experience some of the same conditions and environment that the explorers themselves faced. It is a great place to visit in the Pacific Northwest and is easily paired with other sites along the Oregon Coast.
