Scratch Brewing Company describes itself as a farmhouse brewery, located just outside the Shawnee National Forest. Even though the brewery address lists it in the small town of Ava, Illinois, Scratch is in a rural locale that is quite a trek to even reach since it resides deep in the woods. However, Scratch’s location is an integral part of the brewery’s identity. Scratch seeks to highlight ingredients found in southern Illinois and that the brewers forage on the brewery’s property. For this reason, Scratch’s beers are unlike any other beer you’ve probably had.
The brewery and taproom is situated in a small clearing of the woods, though even the structure itself is nestled into the flora, with plant life very much a part of the experience. The brewery is also quite rustic, with lots of weathered wood on the building, tables, and chairs. There’s lots of seating outside, along with a fire pit. Inside, the rustic theme continues, with more wood and cream-colored walls with glass jars of ingredients that make it look a bit like an apothecary.
Scratch’s taplist changes frequently, but all of the beers highlight the brewery’s commitment to brewing with local and natural ingredients. We were able to try four different beers, our favorite being a beer brewed with elderberry. While we didn’t have any food while we were there, Scratch also offers wood-fired pizza.
Scratch Brewing offers a unique brewery experience, from its woodsy setting to its foraged beer. For these reasons, it’s worth giving Scratch a try.
