In central Pennsylvania, the Johnstown Flood National Memorial preserves the memory of the victims of the 1889 flood. The national park site has a museum and multiple stop off points for visitors to learn more about the flood. The area was previously the lodgings of a club that members and their families would visit. In 1889 the dam above the community broke causing a massive flood to cascade over the lodgings and killed more than 2,200 people. The memorial preserves elements that remain and also the spaces that were lost. When we visited we stopped by the museum and then several of the overlooks. We continue to value the national parks preserving the complex history of the United States and the opportunity to remember those who lost their lives.
