Smith Rock State Park is located in central Oregon, featuring large rock outcroppings and spires that soar above the surrounding desert. These rock formations make it a popular hiking and climbing destination.

One begins a visit to Smith Rock looking down into a small canyon from the rocky ledge above. While much of the canyon is desert-like terrain, a thin river winds through, allowing lush grasses to grow on either bank. The river has a sharp bend within the park, almost turning back onto itself. In between the two parts of the river are large rock spires that tower above the canyon in all sorts of interesting shapes. The contrasts between the red-hued rocks, blue river, and green foliage and the soaring rock spires make for a stunning setting.

Hiking trails circumnavigate these rock formations, as well as the canyon rim, while other trails connect the rim to the canyon below. It was a very hot day, so we only took a short trail from the canyon rim to the river below, affording us nice views of the park. On our way back up, a rattlesnake crossed our path, slithering away from us, but not before rattling its tail for us. It was an interesting, though frightening, encounter. For those who enjoy rock climbing, Smith Rock offers world-class climbing.

Smith Rock State Park is a beautiful place; you won’t regret spending some time at this underrated park.
