Small Towns – Day 2
Near Lake Tahoe, CA is the town of Truckee, CA. The little town is right along the Truckee River with the railroad running right through the town. There are two main roads through Truckee and along them are a plethora of shops and restaurants. The quaint town is full of brick buildings with ornate store fronts and an assortment of small businesses, as well as museums and galleries.
An unusual part of Truckee’s history is the fate of the Donner Party. One of the main roads that run through town is Donner Pass, recognizing the tragedy of the area. During the Oregon Trail a wagon party, the Donner Party, was stuck in the pass due to the weather conditions. Some members of the party starved to death and some even resorted to cannibalism. Although the town has some tragic history, there are memorials to commemorate the loss of lives, including a state park.
When we visited we stopped by Cornerstone Bakery. The eatery is in an adorable brick building with a little seating area in front. Once inside there is a large display case with the baked goods. The bakery has breakfast, lunch, baked goods, and coffee. When we visited we got an assortment of baked goods and they were fantastic! We visited during a trip to Lake Tahoe and it was a lot less crowded than other towns, but had just as much charm and an assortment of options to dine at. We definitely recommend a visit for those in the area visiting Lake Tahoe or Lassen Volcanic!
