Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is located in northern California. Although the park can be easily accessed from Interstate 5, the terrain is rugged and desolate. The focal point of the park is Whiskeytown Lake, which is a great place for boating, paddling, and fishing. However, there are plenty of other things to do in the park, including hiking to one of several waterfalls. We hiked a half-mile trail to Crystal Creek Falls, a small but picturesque waterfall that flows into a lovely pool below it.
The trailhead is off the beaten path a bit, but we found it to be secluded and easy to park. The trail itself is paved, so it is quite accessible, and it offers some nice views of the arid landscape around the park. The arid landscape means it can be very hot, though! The trail terminates at an overlook to the waterfall, but those who wish to can venture down from the overlook and swim in the pool under the waterfall.
Overall, Whiskeytown NRA offers a variety of fun activities in a scenic natural setting. It is worth exploring this national park site.
