Fort George Brewery & Public House is a craft brewery and brewpub located in Astoria, Oregon. Even though the brewery began in only 2007, its operations encompass almost an entire block of downtown Astoria in historic buildings which began as automobile-related businesses. The main building that houses the brewpub is quite interesting, with a large, two-story gray facade with enormous windows. The windows also allow a great amount of light into the interior, which retains much of its industrial character. The indoor space is filled with a large bar and lots of seating, which spills out onto the patio beside the brewpub. On the other side of the patio, Fort George has a separate taproom with an emphasis on beer, rather than beer and food.
The brewpub actually has two separate menus, one for the second floor, which features pizzas and salads, and another for the first floor. We ate on the first floor. The menu features typical pub food, such as burgers, chicken sandwiches, soups, and salads, along with a few fish dishes and appetizers like wings, fries, and hummus. We enjoyed a salad and a chicken sandwich, both of which were delicious. We also sampled a tasting flight. Fort George had a number of beers on tap from a number of different styles. Each of the beers we were able to try were well-brewed and tasty, whether they were brewed to style or were more experimental.
Fort George Brewery & Public House was a delightful way to spend an hour and have a meal. The setting in a historic building just off the banks of the Columbia River was pleasant, and the food and beer were delicious. We highly recommend checking out Fort George; we are already planning when we can go back!
