City House is a James Beard award-winning restaurant located in the Germantown neighborhood of Nashville. The restaurant is located on a lovely, tree-lined street in an old painted brick house. In fact, the restaurant blends in so well to the street that you might miss it, mistaking the building for a residence. The interior immediately feels warm and inviting. Although we didn’t have a reservation, we were able to get two seats at a bar-like area that overlooked the kitchen work area. These ended up being the best seats in the house. We were able to see the chef and his assistants preparing the food and even got to interact with the chef, who was very kind and affable.

As one would expect from a James Beard award-winning restaurant, City House uses fresh, artisanal ingredients in a small, but curated menu. The menu’s focus is on small plates and pizzas. While the menu rotates frequently, we ordered a delicious beet salad and an incredibly simple but tasty pizza with peach and green onions. Each bite of both dishes was superb, with all of the flavors combining beautifully. Our food was so good that we uncharacteristically decided to order dessert, an icebox pie, which was just as good as the rest of our meal. Although we didn’t order any drinks, City House also features a variety of house-made cocktails, local beer, wine, and spirits.

Our visit to City House was one of our best restaurant experiences we have ever had. We had such a warm intimate experience–partly because the space is warm and inviting and partly because of our seats right in front of the kitchen–eating deliciously prepared food. We cannot recommend City House highly enough.
