Near the West Virginia and Virginia borders there are several battlefields dotted throughout Maryland. The majority of the battlefields are from the Civil War, and several of them make of the National Park system. Monocacy National Battlefield is one of many battlefields in the NPS, and provides visitors the opportunity to explore the countryside of Maryland, while also learning more about the battle.
The park has multiple sites dotted throughout the area that visitors can go on a driving tour of. You can get out of your car to learn more throughout interactive signs, but also explore the grounds themselves. We definitely recommend starting though in the Visitor Center, because it helps layout the battle and then makes it easier to follow the direction of the battles.
Although we like learning the history and the tactics of each battlefield, one of the best part of the battlefields is getting to explore the scenery. The park is composed of vast natural areas and historic structures. We spent a couple hours at the battlefield, first exploring the visitor center and then going on the tour to learn more about the battle that helped save the Union.
