Located just east of the dunes along the eastern shores of Lake Michigan, Galien River County Park is situated in uplands and wetlands. The main trail in the park takes you through a forested area along a ridge overlooking the dunes around Lake Michigan. The trail eventually forks, and visitors are able to venture to an overlook tower or a boardwalk. The tower affords visitors sweeping, bird’s-eye views over the wetlands and the small river that runs through it.

The boardwalk winds its way through the wetlands, allowing visitors to see it up close. We were able to see several birds and small mammals living in the wetlands as we walked along the boardwalk.

This little park was a true gem. While the trail was rather short, it featured a plethora of interesting views, both expansive and up-close. We were very glad to have stopped at this park just north of the Michigan-Indiana border and recommend it to those who find themselves in this area.
