Just outside of the Chicago-land area and right along Lake Michigan is Indiana Dunes National park. The park features the waterfront and the sand beaches as the main attraction, providing a great getaway for those looking for hiking or just a relaxing weekend on the beach. The park runs along for the lake shore for miles, and provides visitors the opportunity to explore the unique dune features that have formed. There are several visitor centers to stop at that provide the opportunity to learn about the ecosystem, and its complexities, with films, exhibits, and opportunities to engage in activities. Additionally, throughout the year there is special events for visitors to learn about more specifics, such as birding. The park offers an assortment of activities including biking, camping, bird-watching, hiking, boating, picnicking, beaching, swimming, and horseback riding, as well as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.

When we visited we spent an afternoon at the beach and a morning along the trail. During our visit, the beach was well-visited, but also not packed. We were able to get away for everyone and just sit along the beach and relax, while we watched the little birds scuttle along the waterway. We sat right at the base of a dune, and were truly able to see how large and grand the dunes are. Our hike was during peak wildflower season and provided beautiful views of flowers alongside a creek. We only passed a couple of other people and were truly able to feel like we got away from everyone and just enjoy nature. Indiana Dunes provided the perfect opportunity explore a different ecosystem, but also relax in a different way than many national parks that involve a strenuous hike. It was a nice weekend getaway and we look forward to returning!
