Located in the western part of Maryland, is Antietam National Battlefield. The park is on the outskirts of the town of Sharpsburg near the river that separates Maryland from West Virginia. Antietam National Battlefield is the site of an 1862 Civil War Battlefield that resulted in the bloodiest battle in the war. The site provides visitors with the opportunity to drive along the path of the battle, explore the visitors center, see a few historic structure, and contain a large military cemetery. Visitors can also participate in different programs and events that the site offers, as well as hike the grounds. When we visited we were there for a couple hours and visited the museum and participated in the interpretive trail. We enjoyed slowly driving along the interpretive trail to learn more about the battle, but also take in the scenery of the Appalachian hills. The site’s location makes it an easy stopping off point for many travelers!
