Although not commonly known for mining, the Ozarks in Missouri have been an active mining region. Currently the area described as the New Lead Belt continues to be an active mining region, but further north The Old Lead Belt District in the Park Hills area was once a large producer of lead. The Missouri Mines State Historic Site remembers the history and impact of mining in Missouri with a museum located in the old St. Joe Lead Company facility. The museum consists of a few rooms that contain a large selection of gems and minerals. There is also a short film visitors can watch to learn more about the history and process of mining. Additionally, the site offers a trail that loops around the facility, providing a short hike for visitors to explore the grounds.

When we visited it took us about an hour and a half to watch the film, look at the old mining equipment, and explore the extensive collection. The structure is quite expansive and next to St. Joe Park, an expansion of the mining site, which demonstrates the vast impact mining can have on the landscape. During our visit it was part of a larger trip throughout the mining area. To learn more about the area and a fun little getaway, please visit here.
