State Historic Site Week: Day 2
Iliniwek Village State Historic Site is located in the far northeastern part of Missouri, though its proximity to the border and small size in no way detract from its importance or interesting nature. There are few amenities at this historic site. The main orientation visitors receive is a series of placards that relate the history of the Illinois Native Americans both before and after interactions with Europeans. This particular Illinois village is the only one known to be located in Missouri and is attested by Jesuit missionaries during their journey through this area.
After learning a bit about the Illinois, visitors can walk a short trail where an Illinois village once stood, seeing examples of where and what type of buildings stood within the village based on archaeological evidence. Signs at the examples relate the function of these structures, as well as how the Illinois may have lived. One of these buildings is a longhouse, a long oval structure used to house several family units.

A visit to Iliniwek Village State Historic Site offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the original inhabitants of Missouri and is an interesting and informative experience.
