In the midst of leaf peeping season, a perfect drive is up the Mississippi on the Great River Road. There are a plethora of river towns ranging in size from quaint little towns to mid-sized cities to stop in at and explore. Along the way, visitors can partake in a historic tradition for a restful nights sleep. Before cars, inns would be situated approximately from one another the duration of time a stage coach could make in a day. Most of these historic inns no longer exist; however, a few remain, such as Traveler’s Rest Historic Site that is now a museum for visitors to explore. For those on the Great River Road though you have the unique opportunity to stop and stay at one of the historic inns yourself. The Sherrill Mount House was constructed in 1856 and now houses The Black Horse Inn. The building is beautifully maintained and restored, whilst filled with unique family items and historic trinkets. There is also a a fun copula that visitors can climb up and see the countryside from. The entire experience was quaint and relaxing! For anyone who is interested in history and enjoys a scenic drive, The Black Horse Inn is the perfect stopping point.

Side Note: The owner of the inn has recently passed, so the fate of the inn is uncertain and soon visitors may no longer be able to stay at the inn. Visitors who drive along The Great River Road can still drive by and see the well-kept inn that is registered as a National Historic Place. Hopefully, the inn will remain for a great rest!
