Near Clarksville, TN and the Kentucky border is Fort Donelson National Battlefield in Dover, TN. The site preserves several forts and a cemetery from the Civil War, but is named after the battle at Fort Donelson. The battle at Fort Donelson is what helped to bring Ulysses S. Grant forward as a prominent Union general. The park offers visitors the opportunity to explore the various sites with a scenic drive, a visitor center, hiking, a cemetery, a few forts, and historic buildings. When we visited we were able to go along the main drive that outlines the battle at Fort Donelson. The fort is situated on the Cumberland River and provides stunning views of the river. During our visit there was only a couple other people visiting, so we had the park to ourselves mostly. We both enjoyed the opportunity to learn more and see some incredible views! For those traveling along I-24, Fort Donelson National Battlefield is a great little stopping off point to get out in nature and learn.
