In the heart of downtown Kirkwood is the Pioneer Cafe, a new take on McArthur’s Bakery. For those not from the St. Louis area, or Kirkwood, the name Pioneer Cafe is a nod to Kirkwood High School – the Pioneers. Additionally, the Pioneer Cafe is a joint venture with McArthur’s Bakery and Lafayette Industries, which trains and employs adults with disabilities. The cafe is located in a two-story building with gray siding and the bottom floor has glass widows, allowing light to come into the space. Inside visitors enter into a dining space and carry on into the second room which has a long glass case filled with an assortment of bakery goods. Since it is part of McArthur’s Bakery Cafe, a main focal point of the cafe is on baked sweets, but the cafe also offers breakfast sandwiches, quiches, an assortment of sandwiches, and a variety of beverage options. When we visited we had a breakfast sandwich and a coffee, but agreed we would like to try a baked good at some point!
