The Katy Trail is a rails to trails program that is the longest in the country and runs alongside the Missouri River. The park is a popular bike trail, but visitors can also walk or on the trail. Since the trail runs along the river, it is quite flat and provides views of the river with a nice breeze. Additionally, since the trail follows a former railroad it goes through several small towns, making for nice little stopping point along the way. Typically, when we visit we start at the Augusta stop and walk to Matson, but each little town has something different to offer including shops, breweries, wineries, and places to stay. The Katy Trail runs alongside the Missouri Weinstraße, which also provides a fun way to explore different Missouri wines. Overall, the trail provided a nice perspective of the flood plains and the portion we walked along has a nice little creek bed that runs into the river. The Katy Trail is a great way to get out and explore Missouri’s landscape.
