Just east of St. Louis in Belleville, IL is the Hofbrau Haus. There are around seven locations throughout the United States that are supposed to provide an opportunity for people to experience Bavarian food and culture. The Hofbrau Haus is styled after the large beer halls in Germany and has long tables and benches spanning the room to provide a large array of seating. The Hofbrau Haus has both expansive indoor dining as well as a large outdoor patio. Staff try to enhance the feeling while wearing lederhosen and dirndls.
The Hofbrau Haus is centered around Bavarian-style beer and cuisine. When we visited we had some beer, as well as schnitzel, käsespätzle, and Bavarian potato salad. For Germans and Austrians, your Opa or Oma might make a better meal, but if you don’t want to go to all the work (especially käsespätzle) or if you are not familiar with German cuisine, the Hofbrau Haus is a great way to try an assortment of Bavarian dishes. Additionally, the dishes are Bavarian focused, so the dishes might be different than other regional cuisine you have had. Due to the Hofbrau Haus’ location it is conveniently located across from Lady of the Snows and down the street from Eckert’s making it an easy place to stop by.
Side Note: There is also a gift shop if you would like to buy any trinkets.
