Most of the time visitors to an art museum walk the museum floor, taking in the different exhibits and perhaps sitting a bit to contemplate a particularly moving piece of art. The Sheldon Concert Hall and Art Galleries, however, is currently offering a new way to experience their art galleries. The art museum has commissioned nine local artists to design, make, and implement miniature golf holes within the museum. The Sheldon, then, combines art and mini golf, allowing visitors to play the nine hole miniature golf course while at the same time experiencing the art and learning about the ideas behind each of the holes. Many of the holes have a St. Louis or Missouri theme. For example, there is a hole that focuses on Missouri birds, another that emphasizes the chess heritage in the city, and a third that honors St. Louis as a former powerhouse in the fashion industry. In addition to these holes, there are also holes that look at social issues. The last hole, for instance, is designed around food and is a rather difficult hole, an analogy for the burdens that some people face trying to find enough food to survive. Some of the holes are harder than others, but all feature bright and stimulating art installations. Overall, we found Golf the Galleries to be a new and interesting way to experience art and a fun twist on mini golf. We highly recommend checking it out.
