On a visit to southwestern Virginia we had the opportunity to visit Rising Silo Brewing and Tabula Rasa. Both are a part of Glade Road Growing, a local farm that also brews its own beer and has a kitchen.

Rising Silo and Tabula Rasa are both located in an old barn on Glade Road Growing’s farm. As one might expect, the atmosphere is very rustic. The brewery’s outdoor area is enclosed by old doors and windows that have been repurposed. The rustic elements continue inside, where there is lots of rough wood and corrugated metal, but there are also some lovely features that make the brewery feel cozy. Communal tables sit in front of the bar, where there is a brick oven, farmhouse decor, and a black board with crisp white letters that detail the tap list and kitchen menu.

The brewery features over ten beers on tap, with both standard styles and more modern takes with added ingredients. We tried four of their beers in a tasting flight, getting to try a pilsner and stout, but also a pale ale with apple and a ginger carrot saison. We enjoyed trying the different beers and found Rising Silo to brew some good beer. While at the brewery, we also tried a dessert from the kitchen on site, Tabula Rasa. The menu, featured on rolls of printer paper above the bar, features several items with a farm-to-table emphasis. We enjoyed our treat, which was elegantly prepared. For those who would like to take home some farm-fresh ingredients, there is a small area just outside the brewery with produce and other goods from the farm available to purchase.

We were very happy with our visit to Rising Silo Brewery and Tabula Rasa and were glad we had the opportunity to go. The atmosphere was unique insofar as it was so rustic, but charming. The artisanal beer and cuisine were good and are worth seeking out. Overall, we enjoyed Rising Silo Brewery and Tabula Rasa and recommend
