In Vienna it is commonplace for theater-goers to visit a cafe afterward in order to discuss the performance. After seeing Don Pasquale at the Vienna Staatsoper, then, we ventured to nearby Cafe Mozart to join in this decades long tradition. Cafe Mozart is located across the street from the Albertina art museum, which is just down the street from the Viennese opera house. The cafe has been open since 1899 and is located inside a beautiful white building with a lovely outdoor patio. We, however, chose to sit inside. The interior is brightly lit, with cream colored walls and a light tiled floor. There is still plenty of wood as in a typical Viennese coffeehouse–around the bottom of the walls, the display cases, and the chairs–but it is a bit lighter in color. Small tables with Thonet-style chairs fill the space, along with cozy booths covered in an elegant red fabric. When you first walk in, however, you are met with a lovely display case filled with delicious cakes and pastries. While Cafe Mozart serves breakfast, lunch, and other food, we just ordered coffee and cake, as is typical at Viennese coffeehouses. We had a Mango-Yoghurt Dreieck, a cake with mango mousse, and an Esterházy Torte, an almond cake with amaretto cream. Both of our cakes, as well as our coffee, were delicious. We enjoyed Cafe Mozart and visiting was the perfect way to end our evening at the opera.
