Viennese Cafes – Day 1
Vienna is famous for its cafes, which were established in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. They are so famous, in fact, that they are listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are many cafes to visit in Vienna, and we were privileged to go to several during our last trip there. One of these, Cafe Prückel, is located near the city park on the edge of the eastern side of the Ringstrasse. The cafe is rather plain compared to other Viennese cafes, with rows of simple tables and comfy, single-tone chairs lining the cafe. The one exception is the beautiful chandelier that hangs aloft, the circular glass sparkling in the light. Despite the cafe’s rather austere appearance, large windows on two sides of the cafe allow sunlight to pour in, giving the space a warm and cozy atmosphere. While many cafe-goers order coffee and cake, we were rather hungry, so we each ordered a schnitzel, which was well-made in the Viennese style, along with traditional Austrian potato salad and fresh vegetables. While a bit less ornate than some of the other Viennese cafes, we enjoyed getting to try Cafe Prückel and certainly recommend trying some of the great cafes in Vienna.
