Vienna Week – Day 5
We continue our exploration of Vienna by looking into the distant past. Before it became the capital of Austro-Hungarian and a cultural center of modern Europe, Vienna was known as Vindobona. The city was an outpost of the Roman Empire, a place where soldiers lived in order to guard the northern border of the empire. The Römermuseum, or Roman Museum, in Vienna preserves some of the most well-preserved ruins of Vindobona. Visitors are able to examine the remnants of this period of Vienna’s history, while also learning about the history of the city, its make-up, and what life would have been like in this Roman outpost. As visitors will learn, while this was a Roman outpost, there was an eclectic mix of people in Vindobona–as a border city, Romans and Celts intermingled. Visitors can learn lots of other facts about Vindobona, gaining a greater understanding of Vienna.
