Summer Performances – Day 2

Summer opera in St. Louis has arrived! The Opera Theatre of Saint Louis is currently in the midst of their summer season with performances of The Marriage of Figaro, Rigoletto, The Coronation of Poppea, Fire Shut Up In My Bones, and The Variety Show. The Opera Theatre of Saint Louis takes places at the Loretto-Hilton Center of the Performing Arts in Webster Groves.  Before each show the opera has tents set-up on the lawn for visitors to picnic from a local catering company, and after the show visitors can partake in a cocktail hours to discuss the performance they just saw. The lawn is quite beautiful with a cascading water feature that leads up to the theater. The theater is a unique opera theater since is smaller than most opera theaters and visitors are much closer, providing a more intimate experience. Although the theater is smaller, the opera does not disappoint. The set is a little more simple than the MET, but the performance itself is well-done. The costumes and singing are quite good, providing visitors with a quality opera performance. Unlike most operas, the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis does all of the productions in English, which changes the translations somewhat from the original, but also makes the story lines more easy to follow, and a bit more relatable. Additionally, the smaller stage allows visitors to experience the opera in a new and different way tan larger theaters. We have enjoyed summer opera at the Opera Theatre in St. Louis that provides visitors with a more intimate experience of the opera.
