Our absolute favorite city in Europe is Vienna. The city’s focus on the arts, culture, and history, as well as Margaret’s family being from Vienna make it a very special place to us. A focal point throughout the city is remembering the impact of the Hapsburg monarchy, which is apparent in the majority of the city’s museum. In Vienna there are several former palaces that visitors can now visit to learn more about the history and life of the Hapsburgs. Located in the center of the first district is the Hofburg Palace, which we have had the pleasure of visiting a couple times. The Hofburg Palace is now made up of three museums, the Sisi Museum, the Silver Collection, and the Imperial Apartments that each provide a unique experience.

The Silver Collection showcases the extensive kitchenware, flatware, and serving pieces collection of the Habsburgs. Visitors can spend 20 minutes or hours exploring the extensive array of ornate pieces. We both have thoroughly enjoyed looking at the detailed pieces that were forms of art. For those who like history, art, and antique collections the museum is a delightful experiences that also provides insight into the opulence of royal families.

The Sisi Museum is dedicated to Franz Joseph’s wife, Empress Elizabeth, who is often referred to as Sisi. The museum provides some history behind Sisi, and has various person items on display. Visitors will follow a historical narrative of Sisi up until her death, as well as the many myths generated about Sisi. We strolled through the museum and enjoyed some of the historical artifacts.

The Imperial Apartments are our favorite of the museums and allows visitors to peruse a wide variety of ornately decorated rooms. The Imperial Apartments have been completely renovated and refurbished with the Habsburgs’ furniture collection. The focus is primarily on Franz Joseph, Sisi, and Maria Theresa, but does give details on additional Habsburg members. Each room provides visitors with the history of the room, background information on particular pieces, and broader narratives about individual family members and the empire.
