NYC Restaurant Week – Day 2

One of our absolute favorite New York City dining establishments is not known for being a restaurant, but a coffeehouse, and specifically a Viennese coffeehouse. Cafe Sabarsky is located within the Neue Gallerie on the Upper East Side and is one of Chef Kurt Gutenbrunner’s restaurants.

Like a Viennese coffeehouse, Cafe Sabarsky is decorated in furniture from several Austrian designers including Hoffmann, Loos, and Wagner and has booths along the wall, marble tables with bistro chairs, nicely dressed waiters, newspapers hanging up to be read, a piano in the corner, and most importantly a beautiful assortment of desserts along a marble table. Viennese coffeehouses are known for their coffee and divine pastries, which Cafe Sabarsky has in abundance. Besides the desserts, Cafe Sabarsky also offers a wide assortment of options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, that include some Viennese specialties, as well as German specialties. Besides an array of coffee drinks, Cafe Sabarsky offers a variety of wines, beers, and champagnes.

When we visited we each ordered a coffee, a milchkaffee and a kaiser mélange, and desserts, the klimttorte and the sabarskytorte. Both of our coffees and cakes were absolutely delightful! The atmosphere, coffee, and desserts made Cafe Sabarsky a lovely experience, and an ideal way to partake in Viennese coffeehouse culture even when we are not in Vienna.
