Castlewood State Park lies just west of St. Louis along the Meramec River. Due to its proximity to the city, it is easy to get to the state park from St. Louis; yet, it offers lots of green space, trees, and sweeping views of the landscape. The park has several large grassy areas so that visitors are able to run around and play. Adjacent to these are nice picnic areas and shelters. The real star of the park, however, are the nice hiking trails, some of which are also biking and horse trails. These trails meander through the large hills along the river, offering panoramic views, creeks and lowland areas, and lovely forests. During our time there we hiked the Lone Wolf Trail, which began with a beautiful view of the Meramec below, set among the undulating, tree-covered hills. We then slowly hiked down through the forest and along a creek until we arrived back at our starting point. The trail was enjoyable and relaxing and offered a nice way to get into nature.
