Portland Beer Week-Day 4

Our Portland beer journey continues today with Hair of the Dog Brewing Company, one of the oldest breweries in Portland. Although it is well-known, it has remained a small brewery. The flavor of its beer, however, is anything but small.

The brewery is located in an old warehouse. The interior is rather plain, with high ceilings, a simple bar, and plain tables, although there are also some beautiful wood beams, blue paint, and a few pieces of art and merchandise to add a bit of character to the space. The brewery functions as a brewpub and has a small menu with mostly salads and sandwiches, with a few other entrees and a selection of meats and cheeses. We enjoyed a Caesar salad and the special that day, salmon.

Hair of the Dog specializes in brewing unique beers based on traditional styles and ingredients. We tried three of their beers, Fred, a golden strong ale, Adam, an old ale, and a barrel aged Adam brewed with peaches. All of the beers were strong and boozy, with lots of character and flavors. All three were good, and we certainly had not tried anything quite like these beers before.

Hair of the Dog is a unique brewery that should be on any list of breweries to visit when traveling to Portland. We enjoyed our visit, and hope you will too.
