During our trip to Belgium we learned that the country specializes in frites, or fries (don’t call them French fries!). In Belgium these frites are normally large, long, and square, and they are fried twice to create a soft interior and a crispy exterior. They are also normally served in a paper cone. New York City has its own establishment specializing in these fries. Called Pommes Frites, the restaurant is located in Greenwich Village near Washington Square Park.

Pommes Frites is in a narrow, basement level space with stone walls and and dark wood accents and tables. The restaurant actually reminded us of places you might find in Belgium. There is a small counter at the back at which you place your order. Along with the fries, visitors can choose from a plethora of sauces and toppings, ranging from cheeses to sweet mango chutney to pomegranate teriyaki. We enjoyed our fries with parmesan and fresh herbs, along with ketchup. Our frites were a delicious snack, and our experience was made even better by the ambiance of Pommes Frites.
