A smaller and less visited New York City museum that is one of our absolute favorites is the Neue Galerie. The Neue is located along the Museum Mile and just around the corner from the MET. The museum is located in a former home along Central Park making the museum itself a beautiful venue for a museum. The gallery itself is quite small, but is also home to Café Sabarsky, a superb Austrian restaurant, and most importantly a collection of Gustav Klimt pieces. The museum is known for Austrian and German artworks, but Klimt emerges as the showcase of the museum. The focal piece is Adele Bloch-Bauer I, which is absolutely incredible. Pictures do not demonstrate the vibrant gold, nor the intricate texturing that is a part of the piece and, therefore, seeing it in person is a must. Although Klimt is known primarily for his works that incorporate gold, the exhibit houses some of his lesser known works that are landscapes and absolutely beautiful. Admission to the museum is $20, but $10 for students; however, there is also free admission on the first Friday of the month. We visited during the free Fridays on perhaps the coldest day of the year and thus our wait was only a few minutes; however, we have walked by on Friday evenings before and have discovered a long line waiting to get in so be prepared.
