New York City was not on the cutting edge of the beer scene as it has exploded over the last several years, but it has recently seen a great expansion in its number of breweries. One of the most well-known of these, both in the city and around the country, is Other Half Brewing, located in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn. The brewery itself is located in an unassuming building near the F train stop at Smith-9th Street, and has a taproom at the location. The taproom is simple and industrial, with long tables and benches in a large room, with the bar to one side.
Other Half is known best for its IPAs, which are brewed in the New England style–the IPAs are thick, juicy, tropical, and hazy, with a focus on hop varietal exploration. The taproom has about twenty beers on tap, most of them IPAs, so there is not shortage of options from which to try. We sampled four different IPAs while we were there, along with one of the few non-IPAs offered, a low-ABV sour beer. Other Half’s beers are certainly memorable and distinctive, and we enjoyed each of the beers very much, our favorites being their IPA All Citra Everything and their sour beer.
For some of the best beer New York City has to offer, a visit to Other Half is a must, and we recommend checking out their taproom and sampling some of their many beers.
