Our time at Glacier National Park was wonderful, but we also enjoyed exploring a few of the areas around the park. Since we like trying different breweries, some of our adventures around Glacier involved trying the local beer scene. We went to Backslope Brewing in Columbia Falls, and we also tried The Great Northern Brewing Company in Whitefish, about 30-40 minutes from the western entrance of Glacier.
The brewery is located in a shopping district of Whitefish, with plenty of shops and restaurants in a very walkable area. Across the street are some old trains–the reason for the brewery’s name. The brewery itself is a rather modern looking building from the exterior, but the inside has plenty of wood and decor that reminds visitors where they are–in the middle of the Rocky Mountains in Montana.
We visited at a rather quiet time, so we had the place mostly to ourselves. We quickly received our tasting flight with all of Great Northern’s available beers, mostly their standard options. The beers available were brewed to style, although some had a local flair, such as their lager brewed with huckleberries. The huckleberry lager was one of our favorites, but we also enjoyed their Wheatfish wheat lager. Along with the beer, we also enjoyed the artwork of each beer, which celebrated the local scenery and landscapes.
We enjoyed visiting The Great Northern Brewing Company, and we recommend checking it out, along with some of the other breweries and restaurants in the area, if you travel to Glacier and northern Montana.
