Souvlaki GR writes on its website that the restaurant is “a little taste of Mykonos,” with two locations in Manhattan and a food truck. We visited the location in the Lower East Side and were greeted by a pleasant facade with white stucco walls, bright blue doors, and a patio with stones set into the concrete. Plants set around the exterior add to the ambiance. Inside, the narrow restaurant fits the restaurant’s description of itself–the white stuccoed walls and bright blue doors and accents from the exterior extend to the interior, including even the tables and chairs, making the restaurant look like Mykonos, Greece. The floors from the exterior also appear inside, giving the restaurant a rather rustic and memorable environment.

In addition to a delicious glass of wine, we ordered a lamb skewer served with pita and tzatziki sauce and a Souvlaki Pita, which is Souvlaki’s take on a gyro, served with fries inside the pita. The lamb was tender and flavorful, but its flavor paled in comparison to the pita, with all of its flavors blending together for a mouth-watering combination. We had never had a gyro with fries in it, but the addition was most welcome. It was so good, in fact, that we ordered a second.

The portions at Souvlaki are not large, but the prices aren’t bad either. If you’re hungry and want to try the Souvlaki pita or something similar, you may want to order two. Overall, Souvlaki GR was a great experience, and one of our most memorable at a New York City restaurant. We highly recommend it.
