While there are plenty of places to go to an Oktoberfest, not all Oktoberfests are created equal. If your idea of an Oktoberfest involves drinking pint after pint, this might not be the place for you, but if you want authentic German cuisine and some nice conversation, then read on! Zion German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brooklyn Heights hosts an Oktoberfest every year. Since the church is made up largely of Germans and German immigrants, the Oktoberfest features food that the German congregation members cook specifically for their Oktoberfest, meaning that this Oktoberfest is nearly the same as getting a home-cooked German meal. There is, of course, bratwurst and sauerkraut, but also dishes that are more difficult to find in their German form, such as German potato salad (it uses broth and vinegar instead of mayonnaise), apple strudel, butter cake, and even real German pretzels (nothing like those made in the United States). The food costs about what you would spend on a meal out in NYC, so if you’re in the mood for authentic German food, or would like to try it for the first time, Zion’s annual Oktoberfest is a great place to go. There is usually music and plenty of people to talk to, which adds to your time there. So, write down the first weekend in October on your calendar if you’re craving a great German meal. Prost!
