Right outside of Cumberland Island National Seashore is Crooked River State Park in St. Mary’s, GA. The state park is located not far from the estuary of the Crooked River, so the park features lowlands, marshes, and coastal forests. Water activities are popular at the park since it is on a river with access to the Atlantic Ocean, but we opted to try out some of the four miles of trails that the park offers. We walked along the Bay Boardwalk Trail, which led us through marshlands and forests full of live oaks with Spanish moss, pine trees, and palmetto plants. The marshlands were full of mosquitos, so be prepared with bug spray. There are plenty of other critters at Crooked River, though, including Gopher Tortoises. For those wanting to fully experience the park, there are cottages and campgrounds for overnight stays and miniature golfing for a fun family activity. Crooked River is also a great place for starting a trip up the Georgia coast or for visiting nearby Cumberland Island.
