In the Manhattan neighborhood Chelsea is the Rubin Museum of Art. The museum focuses on art of the Himalayas. The museum is in the same building as a restaurant, but you will go up the stairs and is the next few floors above it. Each floor focuses on a different exhibit ranging from ancient artwork to modern art. The first couple floors we really enjoyed and found them quite interesting, particularly since we do not know that much about Himalayan art. So we definitely recommend the first couple floors if you want to learn more and experience a different kind of art then you typically see in American museums. We went on a Friday evening because that is their free night. A great aspect of living in NYC is that the majority of museums offer free or pay what you wish days making it affordable for everyone to enjoy.  We both found the Rubin Museum of Art to be a neat learning experience.
