So this is the only Georgia State Park we did not really get to explore and that is because it is closed for renovations. We were not aware of this though so we made the drive to the home of Robert Toombs after visiting A. H. Stephens State Park. Toombs and Stephens were friends, so even if you can’t make it inside Toombs home while it is under renovation, you can visit A. H. Stephens home to learn more about Robert Toombs and what a home may have looked like at that time. Toombs home is located in the small town of Washington, GA. It is down the street from the town square filled with shops and restaurants. We enjoyed driving around the town and taking in the architecture of the quaint town. Toombs was a lawyer and then became quite involved in politics regrading the Confederacy. A visit to his home will help to provide you with a more in-depth understanding of life leading up to and during the Civil War. We hope to make another trip to Washington, GA and explore this addition to the Georgia State Parks and the history of Georgia. Each state park has definitely helped to create a deeper understanding of the complex history Georgia and piece together an overarching narrative.
