Decatur hosts a number of festivals throughout the year, and we stumbled on this one rather by accident. The Decatur Beach Party is typically around mid-June every summer. As is usually the case at Decatur festivals, there are booths around the square featuring local artists, craftsmen and women, and other assorted home goods and food available for purchase. There is live music on the square and games for kids. As the name suggests, the main attraction, however, is a giant sand pit in which children can play. There are shovels and buckets that kids can play with, perhaps to help them build a sand castle, along with other sand toys. While the sand pit was a bit crowded, it’s the perfect way to go to the beach without leaving the neighborhood. As with other Decatur events, the Beach Party provided a festive way to celebrate summer and enjoy the warm weather.
